HVAC: What’s In a Name?
HVAC is the acronym used when we talk about the three significant components that provide temperature control to our homes and other buildings. The letters stand for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
What is an HVAC System
An HVAC system for residential and commercial buildings generally involves the heating and cooling devices such as a furnace and central air units connected to ductwork to control the ambient air temperature. Additionally, a thermostat provides the brains for the system. A heat pump might also function in tandem with the air conditioner or as the sole system for heating and cooling the building.
Be aware too that not all HVAC systems require ductwork. Newer HVAC systems may be comprised of several “ductless” units that are installed throughout the house or business. They control the temperature in zones without the need for ducts.
Which HVAC System is For You?
Those four letters do show us that although the basic premise of heating, ventilation and cooling sounds simple, a multitude of factors determine what kind of HVAC system gets installed into a home or business.
Like most anything these days, HVAC systems can be simple or elaborate setups that range across a spectrum of prices and features. Controlling a home environment is not as simple as pumping in heat or chilled air. Fuel type, structure shape and size, controlling humidity, controlling air pollutants, accounting for human traffic, building codes and other variables all factor into the choices that determine what we want or need from an HVAC system.
Homeowners and businesses should consult qualified HVAC professionals or contractors like ours at Temp Control when making a decision about switching systems or starting from scratch.
